The expertise and energy of lived experience advocates is increasingly being recognised for the value it brings to service design, delivery and improvement. Some advocates are finding ways to create opportunities for economic participation through their entrepreneurship.

Independence is a key goal of the National Disability Insurance Schemen (NDIS). Understanding how culture interacts with how independence is defined and what it looks like is critical to achieving person centred outcomes.

Quang Nguyen

Quang Nguyen is a disability advocate and dedicated change champion. Quang lives with cerebral palsy and his passion for technology has literally given him a voice to speak up for his own rights and the rights of people with disability to be included in the community and to achieve their life goals. His dedication, knowledge, skills and charm have won him many friends and supporters.

Quang was born in Vietnam and came to Australia in 1985 when he was four years old. He experienced many challenges being a child with disability in a new country and it took a great deal of courage, determination and family support for him to be included in his local community.

Growing up, Quang attended mainstream schools, joined local sports clubs, studied at TAFE and had a variety of supported employment jobs. He also attended the Australian Business and Retail Academy from 2012 – 2013.

He has worked tirelessly for 20 years to become a well known and respected disability advocate. He served as a NSW Government Living Life My Way champion from 2013-2016 and received National Australia Day Council Australian of the Year awards in 2012 and 2014 for his community service. He is currently on the boards of Diversity Disability Alliance, Council for Intellectual Disability and the Multicultural Disability Advocacy Association and he is an NDIS champion.

In 2017 Quang started his own business, The Quang Nguyen Network with support from Think Act Achieve and SSI IgniteAbility . He has developed over 50 PowerPoint presentations on a range of disability awareness topics that he delivers using text-to-voice software. He has presented to 15 culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) groups and presented with translators for 12 of these groups. He welcomes the opportunity to share his lived experience, his knowledge and skills with new audiences.
